Key’s at the Foshay

Key’s at the Foshay is one of the best kept secrets in Minneapolis. Not only do they serve breakfast all day, they also have amazing desserts.

The best part of  this restaurant is their staff. They greet you and remember you from past visits. Ask you how you like items on the menu. Tell you stories. But, most importantly, make you laugh.

Be prepared Key’s you can’t get rid of me now!

Because Key’s knows how to treat a customer and friend

Salut Bar Americain- on Grand

I had great company last night when I attended Salut in St. Paul. Thank goodness, because otherwise I would not have been very happy when I left there.

When I got to the hosts table I waited because there was no one there to help me. When someone showed up I said I had reservations under my name and I was not sure if anyone from my party was already there, thinking that this host would be able to show me where our table was. They just looked at me as if I had something on my face. Then said, “well, did you look in there to see if they are here?” So, we went on our way without help from the host.

It stared out pleasantly with water, some bread, and butter.  Our waitress was MIA. We finally ordered drinks and meals. Then, the strangest thing happened. Our waitress came out with a small dish with some small bites, placed it in front of one of us, muttered something and left. It took us awhile to figure out if that was something that came with what one of us ordered or if it was just an add on to our meal. We finally decided to share it. It made for an awkward moment.

The people who enjoyed the main course were the ones that ordered burgers. They looked delicious. My suggestion would be the burger with swiss and onion I believe it is called the french onion soup burger. I was hungry for something on the lighter side and ordered a staple. A GREEK salad. What ended up coming out was a hodge-podge salad with something that they must have had left over. My Greek salad had no cucumbers and had both red and green peppers all over it. It was the majority of the salad. If you take a look at the menu it does not even mention peppers come on it. I wasn’t sure, therefore I did not question the salad I ordered. I thought I may have not read the menu correctly. How disappointing, I spent 10 dollars on a salad that I really didn’t like. I might have ordered something else other than a salad but they were a little bit out of my price range for a mid-week dinner with friends who are on a budget.

My wine was fantastic. I had the $6.00 Merlot and would recommend that as a cheap, good wine.

My advice, if you go there order a burger and not a salad.

because what is on the menu should be what you get.

Key’s Cafe and Bakery

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I love happy hours. Why? Because happy hours are happy and usually make me happy after working all day. Plus, it is a great excuse to meet up with people you haven’t seen in a while.

Now, this place is not what I would have picked as my happy hour pick. But, I am glad I went along with it.

IT WAS AWESOME!

Mostly, because of our wonderful server. Even though she wasn’t there every second, and wasn’t the most attentive, she warmed my heart, made me feel good, and had me laughing. Plus, she kept bringing me $2.50 whiskey-cokes. I am going to hunt her down every time that I go there now.

We had their new appe-teaser which was the Greek plate with olives, hummus and this feta stuff that was amazing. We also had the nachos not the macho-nachos. Both were only 7 dollars. Both I would order again.

They look like they have really awesome desserts as well which I may have to try next time. I will keep you updated on my favorites. Can you really go wrong with a rice crispy bar the size of your head though?

Plus, free entertainment watching the Valets from the W run around.

HERE is there website.

Try it out and let me know what you think.

Because someone who warms your heart can change your day.

Zelo Happy Hour

One of my favorite Happy Hours in Minneapolis is at Zelo it is called 4-5-6. It’s clever and a great deal.

If you are like me and starving after work it is a great place to stop with a friend and have a 5 dollar drink and a 5 dollar appetizer. The drinks on the menu are worth the 5 dollars that they are.  My personal favorites are the Moscow Mule and the Margarita both taste fresh.  I have had a few that were not made correctly and told the server that. It was quickly fixed.

The food is also very good. Their pizzas a great and they offer them on this menu too! I love the margarita but that is because I am not a meat-za fan but I have heard that the sausage is yummy as well. The other thing you can’t leave without trying is the Spicy Tuna Crisps. I don’t know how to explain them but I can eat a whole plate in 2 minutes flat.

I actually had a horrible experience there about a week ago when my friend ate an under cooked Turkey Burger. I tasted the second one and it was VERY under cooked.  I can’t say that the situation was handled well by the restaurant at first. The server tried to convince me that people say that a lot but that they are cooked.  It was not. She asked them to take it away and actually got sick (sorry to whomever cleans the bathrooms). They then wanted to cook it more and bring it back to the table!!! She refused it and said she did not want anything else. The manager also came over to tell us it was in fact under cooked.  The only thing that made this situation much better was that the server came to apologize and said it was not his intention to say that it was not under cooked. I appreciated the fact that he did not blame the cook and admitted that he should have handled it differently. I have had this server on many occasions and he even remembers my last name. So, Kudos to him for doing the right thing.

It was very hard for us to even tell the server that we thought it was under cooked. It is hard, at least for me, to complain at a place that I frequent quite often. To say the least, this experience did not get me to stray away because I do really enjoy the food (I don’t think I will ever have another Turkey Burger there) and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun happy hour.

If you go there let me know what you think about it.

Because you always get yourself in trouble when you try to eat healthier

Minnesota Monthly Food & Wine Experience

Today I attended the Food & Wine Experience at Target Field. I had a wonderful time sampling wine, beer, and delicious foods. It was put on by Minnesota Monthly magazine and supports MPR.

Here are some of my hits:

I hope that Top Chef comes to Minnesota for a season because it would be awesome to the see the chefs go head to head at this event. There were some definite hits in the food department from the Chow Girls, Seven, Faribault Cheese, Splendid Spreads, Just Truffles, Drooling Moose, and BelGioioso Cheese.

Firstly, everything at the Chow Girls table was delicious including the nuts. Let’s just say I would love to see them make a restaurant with these great appetizers.  Seven was also a hit. I even saw a line form there for part of the day. Rightfully so because the sushi was great and so was the beef skewer. The surprises in the food department for me was from the Cheese companies. A local cheese hit was the Faribault cheese caves. I couldn’t tell you what one was my favorite but I saw many of the men try a few of the chipotle garlic cheese curds. Also the BelGioioso spread was outstanding, it was easily missed because of the positioning of it but they had some wonderful examples of how to use their product. I got a recipe that I am going to try from Splendid Spreads. They had this 7 layer dip in a greek style that was yummy. I hope they didn’t mind that I took two.  The two hits for desserts for me were the Just Truffles and Droolin Moose.

Now lets get to the wine. I tried all the fancy expensive wines that you go to the event to try and found that I clearly have no wine experience and couldn’t tell the difference between them and cheaper wines other than some of these expensive wines were a little too aggressive and peppery for me.

But, the point of the event was to try something new, it was fun to try wines that I might not buy from the store. Here are a few that I enjoyed that might be different than what the judges picked. From Z wines the Landskroon Dry Chenin Blanc, I am not a huge white wine drinker but this one was good. The Monogamy Cab from the Wine Sisterhood. It was unexpected and good. Plus, these wines have fun names and would be fun to give as a gift and in a reasonable price range.

The beer. Wow, it was great to see the beer at this event, I had the most fun at Bells Brewery an employee showed me the Darth Vader a mixture of two of their beers. I loved it! You will have to ask them what it is because I think they keep it a bit of a secret. Plus, they had all their seasonal beers. I also enjoyed Surley as I always do but, I wish they would have brought all of their beers to try. They may have gotten a new lover of that beer. Shells Firebrick was an unexpected hit for me as well. My only note about the beer is that I did not want to put the beer in my wine glass. I hope that next year they all bring their own small cups to try with.

The best hidden gem of the whole experience was the Dakota Jazz room corner who had Jazz music playing, food, a wonderful drink, and sitting room! It was nice to relax there an actually be able to enjoy the food and drinks from them.

The not so hits:

It would have been nice to have more sitting areas. I noticed many older people complaining about their feet hurting myself included and having no where to sit. Also, more live music would enhance the event. I have to say that it was pretty awkward trying to carry everything, drink, and eat at the same time. They should also add an area with cigars. It would fit in perfectly with this event.

One of the most hilarious comments I heard during the day was, “holy crap there is more to this thing, we now have to go this way, this is soooooooooo great!”

It would have been nice to know that there were two ways to go when we got there. We were lucky we stopped a volunteer who told us to go a certain way go all the way back and travel down. Otherwise, I think it might have been a difference experience for me.

Spilling food all over myself over and over again was not so much fun. I was going to wear a white shirt. I am so glad that I didn’t. Most of the food places did not make items that were easy to eat. I should say easy to eat while holding a wine glass and a bag. They needed to channel top chef and the amuse bouche challenges. Where all you have is one bite to get all the flavors in.  Although, I think the sitting areas would make this easier and people wouldn’t look as stupid wearing wine glasses around their necks.

Overall, I loved this and will come back next year with more people. I also would recommend this to my friends as a great Valentines Day present. There is nothing like being at Target Field on a sunny day drinking and eating. It was a beautiful setting for an event like this. Until then I can fill my free wine glass with my favorite wines from this year.

Fish Fries Minnesota

It is Catholics favorite time of the year Lent! The Catholics give up eating meat on Fridays but they get to have something delicious instead: FISH!

You don’t have to be a Catholic to enjoy the fish fries around the state during the Lenten season. Welcome one and all to the fish fries!

A full list can be found at The Catholic Spirit.

Here is a few of my picks:

St. Albert the Great Catholic Church
2836 33rd Avenue South
Minneapolis

612.724.3643

4:30-7:30PM

They feed about 700 people every Friday night.  It is the Twin Cities most popular fish fry. They have bingo and many other activities but be prepared to stand in a line.

www.stalbertthegreat.org

Any of the VFW’s are a great spot to go because you can get beer as well. Richfield VFW is always highly rated. Beer always enhances the flavors of the fish or at least that is my perception.  Knights of Columbus Hall in  Bloomington is another hall open 5 to 9 PM at 1114 American Blvd. Call (952) 888-1492 for reservations.

If you are looking for something other than fish, head over to Our Lady of Guadalupe in St. Paul from 11:00-6:30PM. You can also get them to-go by the dozen. On 401 Concord St.

My best suggestion is to try out a parish in your community. There is nothing better than meeting your neighbors over a great meal.

I would love to hear about your Fish Fries. Leave me a comment or find me on twitter @mplsgossipgirl.

Primebar Takes Over Il Gatto Spot in Uptown

As many of you have heard from Stephanie March who writes Foodie File on @mspmag Primebar is coming to Minneapolis in Il Gattos Uptown location.

Primebar has a location in Dallas and is a national chain and I wonder how that will do in Uptown. It is a self proclaimed contemporary ale house. I think uptowners are more of a non-contemporary crowd, but maybe I am wrong. It does have a late night menu listed and I think that will help. But, the prices are a little bit over what uptowners like to pay unless the food is worth it.  Hope they bring their A game! The ambiance at the Dallas location looks like it would fit in here and I hope they keep that similar at this location.  Look at Primebar Dallas Here.

I am looking forward to trying Primebar! Let me know what you think @mplsgossipgirl and any readers from Dallas, Texas tell me what you think of your location.

Because really? Can there be too many bars?
